Cheshire Cheese, Doseley
The earliest I can find the name Cheshire Cheese is on a 1863 map, and again in the 1881 census when Randle Leigh aged 63 was the Beer Seller there, before then in 1871 and 1851 he was a Beer Seller in the same area of Doseley but there was no name for the pub / Beer house, he’s birth place is Capesthorne Cheshire England so this may have something to do with the naming of the pub? Randle Leigh advertised in at least five different trade directories from 1851 to 1880 with the address Frame Lane, I cannot find him in the 1861 census.
In the 1841 census things become a bit more difficult, there are two pubs / Beer houses in this area of Frame Lane district 6, I think they are what we would call today Travellers Joy and Cheshire Cheese, the most probable keeper of the Cheshire Cheese is Richard Goring because Randle Leigh’s wife’s maiden name was Goring but I can’t find a family connection, the other possible is Richard Growcott.
